Good news for rural England - 18 July 2000

Commenting on the Government’s Spending Review 2000 announced today, Countryside Agency chairman Ewen Cameron warmly welcomed the commitment to introduce rural proofing across all areas of Government action and the clear role for the Countryside Agency in helping to achieve that.

Mr Cameron said: “Ensuring a rural dimension in all policies will have a real impact on the lives of people who live and work in the countryside. I am also delighted that the Government has recognised the importance of market towns in the economic and social life of rural areas. We have stressed the need to give a new lease of life to market towns and look forward to working closely with the regional development agencies, local authorities and others on the market towns initiative announced today.

“An average 10 per cent real annual growth in budgets to deliver improved access to open country, implementing the Countryside and Rights of Way Bill, and support for rural communities is good news for people who live in the countryside as well as those who visit it.

“In addition to these specific rural programmes, there is much in the Government’s overall announcements which could be of benefit to rural areas, for example increased expenditure on housing, transport, education and crime. The test will be whether the needs of rural people are fully taken into account in the delivery of these essential services.”
