Rural Medway - New approaches to community planning

The project is located within an area of strategic importance, within the Thames Gateway growth area. It includes areas of high quality countryside zoned for development. The project aims to involve rural-urban fringe communities, through innovative community planning processes to help inform the creation of Medway's Local Development Framework.

 

 

The project aims to test new approaches to community planning in rural Medway.  It will embrace creative and innovative thinking in involving local people in identifying and planning for the needs of their community.  The project will explore how value can be added to statutory planning processes through enhanced forms of communiuty involvement.

Overall the project aims to help demonstrate:

  • How Statements of Community Involvement can best utilise and support the use of community-led 'plans' as a positive way to fully engage communities in Local development Framewroks;
  • How community-led 'plans' can lead to more effectice local planning partnerships bewteeen rural communities/parish councils and the local planning authority; and
  • How rural community-led 'plans' can best influence and/or become an integral part of the Local Development Framework and how their spatial planning elements can be taken forward in planning policies/guidance.

The project will be based in the rural urban fringe area to the south east of the Hoo peninsula.  The key objectives of the project are:

  • To enage local people in the planning and development process
  • To manage the early stages of the planning process to achieve high quality sustainable development
  • To introduce concensus building within the planning process
  • To test and develop and integrated and multi-disciplinary approach to the new planning framework
