Forest of Mercia cross-boundary Area Action Plan

The Forest of Mercia is a Community Forest located to the north of the West Midlands Conurbation, spanning three Districts and a Metropolitan Borough. The area is a mix of greenbelt land, former mining and mineral extraction areas and isolated pockets of Staffordshire Heathland.

Aim of the project

In the past the potential for regenerating the area within the forest has been hampered by the differing approaches of the Unitary, County and District Councils to development within the Forest. The new Planning System offers a method of harmonizing the approach to development by implementing a joint Area Action Plan. The Area Action Plan will propose spatial planning and design policies that will look to regenerate the core area of the Forest.

The intention is to develop an Area Action Plan that can be adopted by each of the local planning authorities
