AP02/12 RIGHTS OF WAY IMPROVEMENT PLANS

The Chairman wrote to Alun Michael on 8 May to inform him that the Board felt strongly that the Rights of Way Improvement Plan process should be backed by funds for implementation. The letter reminded the Minister of the Agency's offer to act as a grant aiding body for funds allocated for Rights of Way Improvement Plans. The Agency also submitted a free standing formal response to the DEFRA consultation which made the point that the guidance must include more advice on how to implement the improvement plans.

NEW HEALTH INITIATIVE

The Department of Health announced on 20 May its commitment to a new £2.5 million health initiative in partnership with the Countryside Agency and Sport England.

The initiative will:

  • encourage people in low income areas to become more physically active by improving access to their local environment and facilities,
    • evaluate the effectiveness of each pilot, then
    • share good practice with Primary Care Trusts - the new local tier of the NHS which has responsibilities for preventative health.

The initiative assumes a contribution from the Countryside Agency of £900,000 over 3 years. A paper seeking approval for this investment will be presented to the September board meeting.
