How to use the QoL Assessement approach as a tool for identifying what matters and why, so that the consequences of plans, development proposals and management options on quality of life can be better taken into account by practitioners and decision takers. Discusses what the approach is, what tasks it can potentially help with (including two worked examples), where it is appropriate to use, how it relates to other appraisal methods and decision support tools.

This practical guidance was prepared in June 2003
following lessons learnt from two Quality of Life Assessment workshops at Lydiard Country park, Swindon (restoration and development of country park and historic landscape) and for the start of the Bristol Frome Flood management Strategy. It also draws lessons from a review of the QoLA process by facilitators and practiioners. It is an invaulable guide for anyone setting up and running a QoLA workshop with a range of stakeholders.

QoL Assessment and Environmental Impact Assessment
Links between environmental impact assessment (EIA) and QoL Assessment. Defines the two processes and their respective strengths/weaknesses, suggests some theoretical links between them, discusses two development projects to which both processes were applied, and reviews lessons learned from these case studies.

Case Studies of the Application of the QoL Assessment Approach
Findings and lessons learned from sixteen pilots of the QoL Assessment approach carried out in 1998. Pilots are: four site-specific/small-scale applications, four at district/unitary plan level, three at structure plan level, three at regional level, and two integrated settlements. Concludes with lessons learned from pilots.
