Church Farm Organics wins the 2006 FARMA 'Eat the View' Award
Sponsored by the Countryside Agency's ‘Eat the View’ initiative, the winner of the 2006 National Farmers Retail and Markets Association’s (FARMA) special award for good environmental practice and consumer education was announced as Church Farm Organics in the Wirral. Church Farm Organics is run by Steve and Brenda Ledsham and their family. The farm is a registered organic holding producing fruit, vegetables, lamb, and herbs, sold through the farm shop, café, and box scheme, together with a wide range of other quality local foods. Recycling, educational activities, school visits, and children’s parties take place throughout the year. The award was announced and presented at this year’s FARMA conference in Harrogate. Fishing for good
New report from Forum for the Future looking at the economic, environmental and political issues in sustainable fisheries management, including a detailed look at the Marine Stewardship Council's certification scheme and Unilever's Sustainable Fisheries initiative. A consumer survey to inform the report found that more than a third of people in the UK say that they never think about over fishing when buying fish but 29% say they would cut down on threatened fish, if they knew which they were. Trading Places: The local economic impact of street produce and farmers' markets
Research report for the Mayor of London, London Food, and the London Development Agency examining the contribution that street and farmers markets in London make to local economies, communities and to London as a whole. Organic sales grow
Latest figures from the Soil Association reveal that total organic sales are growing by £2.3 million a week, but the multiple retailers share of the market slipped from 81% to 75% during 2004, whilst sales through box schemes, farm shops and farmers' markets grew by 33%. The whole market is now worth £1.2 billion a year. Source: Organic Market Report, 2004
Asda stocks local milk
Seven Lancashire Asda stores have begun stocking locally sourced Bowland Fresh branded milk, produced through a processing and bottling initiative owned by 15 farmers in the Forest of Bowland. The brand has been in Booths supermarkets for three years and caught the eye of Asda bosses. Source: The Grocer.
