Peak District EQM commended in national Business Commitment to the Environment Awards
The Peak District Environmental Quality Mark project has been judged one of the best 'runners up' for the 2003 Business Commitment to the Environment Awards. The Environmental Quality Mark project featured in the presentation at the award ceremony on 20 April in London. The EQM Mark is a certification mark that can only be achieved by businesses that actively support the best environmental practices in the Peak District National Park. The Business Commitment to the Environment Awards are run annually, aimed at British businesses that can demonstrate commitment to the environment. Click here for more information.
UK organic produce still missing from supermarket shelves
A survey by the Soil Association has found that many in-season UK organic products are still missing from supermarket shelves, in their place were unnecessary imports which could put British organic farmers out of business. Although some supermarkets were stocking much more than others, none were stocking 100% of in season produce.
Food Vision website launched
A new website has been launched by the Local Government Association, Food Standards Agency, and the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services to help share information more effectively and inspire local authorities to develop relevant local food initiatives with partner organisations. EU names two new PGIs
A French strawberry (Fraise du Perigord) and a Spanish cheese (Queso de Valdeon) are the latest additions to the European Unions list of protected food names with PGI status. In addition, a butter produced in the Pyrenees (Mantega de l'Alt Urgell i la Cerdanya) has been included under the EU's PDO and PGI programmes. Event organised by the North East Land Links project and supported by the Countryside Agency. It aims to provide an opportunity to discuss the issue of food in schools and to hear from others who have successfully implemented positive changes in their school meals provision.
