The Yorkshire and the Humber Region

Yorkshire and the Humber is a diverse region located in the north of England.

Our region is a patchwork of great contrasts that reflect the English landscape

  • Wild open moorland and dales,
  • Tranquil chalk uplands,
  • Species-rich lowland heaths,
  • Different types of farming, which covers 76% of the region,
  • Ancient and more recent woodland
  • A stunning coastline
  • Historic gems reflecting religious, agricultural and industrial heritage
  • The largest estuary in England.
  • Sprawling metropolis, prosperous market towns and villages

Our countryside acts as the green lungs for the metropolitan areas particularly in the South and West of the region, providing open spaces to help protect biodiversity, relax in and enjoy.

The region has a population of 5 million, 1.04 million of whom live in rural areas.

We are fortunate that there are three National Parks in our region, four Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, four sections of Heritage Coast and four National Trails, which draw visitors from home and abroad.   20% of our region has environmental national or international designations, which help to provide long-term protection.
