The former Countryside Agency, with the help of Lottery funding from the Big Lottery Fund (BLF) helped 200 communities improve their quality of life. By creating or enhancing green spaces near to people's homes, we helped people who have experienced disadvantage, and places where regeneration of the local environment is crucial.

We reached our target of 25 projects in the South West back in 2004, and most groups have by now either completed construction, or are close to doing so.

In March 2006 we produced a directory of Doorstep Greens in the South West, showing plans, photographs and giving details of the various projects. It is a celebration of the achievements of all the communities across the region whose hard work and persistence resulted in the creation of 25 beautiful, multi-functional and sustainable open spaces, which as well as being an important resource, have helped to give their neighbourhoods a renewed sense of pride.

We have also produced a national document detailing the experiences of the Doorstep Greens scheme. ‘Opening Green Doors’ is an evaluation of five years of Doorstep Greens and shows how new open spaces, play areas, nature reserves, village greens and flower gardens are helping to improve quality of life for communities everywhere.
