The countryside offers everybody opportunities for recreation, and those using the countryside can bring new income to rural businesses.

Yet many people don't know where they can go, or can't get there, for example because there is no transport, and many people feel unwelcome. So we are supplementing our statutory work on access and National Trails with research to investigate why some people aren't able to enjoy the countryside.

What are we doing?

  • Open country defined and easily accessible.
  • Barriers to countryside enjoyment removed.
  • Improved public health and well-being through better managed and improved rights of way network and recreation sites.
  • National Trails providing high-quality, long-distance routes.
