National Trails

Providing high quality long distance routes

The Pennine Way is England’s first and most famous national trail, and 61km (13%) is in the East Midlands. Overall, it is used by around a third of a million walkers each year and they contribute £2,000,000 to the rural economy. This high use has damaged the Pennine Way, on the ground, in the past, but it has been restored to a sustainable standard and it is now being proactively maintained.

Pennine Bridleway

The southern section of the Pennine Bridleway through Derbyshire to the South Pennines opened in 2004, starting at Middleton Top (for cyclists) and Hartington (for horse riders) in Derbyshire.
