Walking the Way to a Healthy North East

Walking the way to health (WHI) is an initiative aimed at improving the health and fitness of more than one million people throughout England, especially those who do little or no exercise, or who live in areas of poor health - through the participation in short, free doorstep walks. In the North East alone there are 25 grant aided WHI schemes who have recruited volunteer walk leaders, identified different walking routes, organised programmes of short led walks and also produced easy to follow self-guided information.
WHI is a joint initiative between Natural England and the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and benefits from extra funding from the Big Lottery. The schemes in the North East have also received support and benefited from the enthusiasm and energy of local authorities, primary care trusts and charitable and voluntary bodies who are all committed to getting the North East walking more.
Across the North East, WHI schemes are organising a variety of walks within communities from the doorstep. Some schemes have organised walks specifically for people with disabilities, cardiac rehabilitation, lunchtime workplace walks and after school clubs plus many more. Here are a selection of some schemes that have organised a series of walks in the area:
