England Leisure Visits Survey: background and further information

The 2005 England Leisure Visits Survey is the latest in a series of biennial surveys that began in 1994.
Originally known as the United Kingdom Day Visits Survey and more recently as the Great Britain Day Visits Survey 2002/03, devolution has now enabled the survey contents to be adjusted to suit the business needs of participating countries. The result is that separate Scotland and England surveys are currently undertaken although there is no equivalent one for Wales at the present time.

There are a number of other national visitor surveys, but the leisure visits survey is the only one to collect data for England and region on the volume and value of leisure visits to inland towns/cities, seaside towns/cities, the countryside and the seaside.

Our surveys help us to understand patterns of use and trends and are used widely in policy development, research and by those involved in planning and providing leisure facilities.  The surveys provide important data to support decisions and targets relating to, for example, health and well-being, lifestyles, leisure economy, quality of access and transport.

The previous survey publications may be purchased from: Natural England Publications, PO Box 125, Wetherby, West Yorkshire LS2 7EP. Tel:0870 120 6466. Email: naturalengland@twoten.com.

Alternatively the survey series data is lodged with the UK Data Archive, University of Essex, Wivenhoe Park, Colchester, Essex, CO4 3SQ. Tel: 01206 872143.
