Research supporting the Outdoor Recreation Strategy
Henley Centre's report to us on the main factors that will influence the future of outdoor recreation includes a paper introducing the research and five 'discussion papers'. These are all available below. Each of the discussion papers focuses on a different aspect of outdoor recreation.
- Background and introduction to the research. (339kb pdf)
- Demand for outdoor recreation (542kb pdf) looks at the changing demand for leisure based around different demographic groups, and the gap between the wealthy and those perceived to be ‘excluded’ from outdoor recreation. It considers the challenges of communicating with this diverse population.
- Health and outdoor recreation (485kb pdf) discusses the implications of the increasing importance of a sense of well-being in people’s lives. It also looks at issues related to the rise in obesity and unfit/unhealthy children, and the management of increasing health inequalities across the population as a whole.
- Supply of places for outdoor recreation (614kb pdf) focuses on how the change in the amount and type of leisure people seek may impact on places for outdoor recreation, and the infrastructure needed to manage this.
- Planning for outdoor recreation (634kb pdf) looks at how existing planning frameworks at national, regional and local levels may develop over the next 20 years, and the risks and opportunities that these possible changes may present.
- The impact of outdoor recreation (492kb pdf) summarises the implications of the findings in the other papers and sets out the critical issues to consider in drawing up the outdoor recreation strategy.
These discussion papers are supported by background information about the project in the form of 11 appendices.
