National Step-o-Meter Programme

Building on the knowledge and experience gained from WHI's pedometer based projects since 2002, it aims to make pedometer use accessible, affordable and effective in clinical practice, particularly to sedentary, 'at risk' or 'hard to reach' groups.
Over 90% of all Primary Care Trusts in England are participating. Each is offered 30 free 'Loan Packs' (total of 300 pedometers) plus complementary materials and a free local training event for 30 frontline healthcare professionals. The national 'roll out' started in May 2006 and continued until January 2007. A national evaluation of the project will be undertaken with a report due later in 2007.
