National Trails provide opportunities to walk, or in some places ride a horse or cycle, for short or long distances through some of the most outstanding scenery in England and Wales.

The Countryside Commission was given the remit for designating long-distance routes in 1949. There are 19 official long-distance routes in Britain overseen by Natural England in England, the Countryside Council for Wales in Wales and Scottish Natural Heritage in Scotland.

The 15 routes in England and Wales are collectively called National Trails and represent over 2,500 miles (4,000 km) of managed paths.

  • National Trails offer liberating and rewarding natural adventures
  • National Trails are a close, quick and easy way to access and connect to the nation's best countryside and heritage
  • National Trails provide a clear, simple and timeless opportunity to recharge and be inspired
  • National Trails are some of the nation's favourite walks and rides - officially designated by government and supported by Natural England and the Countryside Council for Wales
  • National Trails are cared for by dedicated managers and marked with an acorn symbol as a sign of quality
