What funding sources are there for Greenways?
There are a variety of funding sources that it is possible to access for Greenways. These include European, Government and local authority sources, Landfill Tax, Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund, Lottery Sources, charitable trusts and health authorities and trusts. Information on the wide range of funding sources, and guidance on how to access this, is given in the Greenways handbook.

A key funding source accessed by the Greenways Demonstration Projects has been the Local Transport Plan (LTP) produced by the relevant Highway Authority. Those that have been successful in doing this have found it is a distinct advantage to include an officer involved with transport or the LTP process on the Steering Group.

Who pays to maintain Greenways?
Many Greenways have been adopted by local authorities, and they are then responsible for their maintenance. Where a Greenway is the result of a Section 106 agreement, this can also include money for maintenance over a set period of years.

An advantage of involving the local community and user groups in the whole process, engendering a sense of ownership, is that they often help to look after the Greenways in some way. This can range from reporting problems and carrying out surveys, to carrying out practical work.
