Demonstration Sites

These sites tackled strategic issues such as getting links where people need them, providing for shared use, and sourcing funding. They were carefully monitored to provide a pool of knowledge for all groups and local authorities planning their own schemes.

There were 6 Greenways Demonstration Areas supported by the Countryside Agency: 

Furness Greenways partnership - Demonstration section on Walney Island, principal use for recreation.
Greater Lincoln - Focus on meeting public demand for Greenways with a fragmented rights of way network.
South East Dorset Greenlink - Five pilot networks aimed at reducing car usage.
The Mersey Forest - Plans to develop a Greenways network across the largest of England's community forests.
Watling Chase & Hertsmere -Work of a community partnership developed from Local Agenda 21 origins.
Swindon - Exploring opportunities of existing network of footpaths, bridleways, disused canals and railways connecting the urban centre to the countryside.
