Good practice findings from six Greenways demonstration projects

Introduction

The Countryside Commission floated the idea of Greenways and Quiet Roads in their 1996 Strategy, and received a positive response. Research carried out in 1997 showed that: there was a strong demand for multi-user routes; advice and information were needed covering all stages of route development; and there was a lack of financial support for off-road multi-user routes.

The Greenways and Quiet Roads (now known as Quiet Lanes) programmes were set up in 1998, and the Commission established seven pilots to determine best practice in developing Greenways. The seven pilots later became six, with Swindon replacing Nuneaton & Bedworth and Hull & East Riding. The other pilots were:

  • Mersey Forest
  • Furness Peninsular
  • Watling Chase
  • South East Dorset
  • Lincoln.

Each ran for approximately 3 years, within the period 1998/1999 to 2001/2002.

This summary pulls together the findings of those pilots, as expressed through the review process carried out between October 2001 and March 2002 at the end of the pilot phase.
