Common experience of the six Greenways demonstration projects

Lessons Learned

These are the retrospective thoughts of projct managers at the end of the Greenways demonstration period.
  • The PACE process (Plan, Activate, Check, Enable) has been a useful checklist;
  • It has been important to have a project officer and/or project champion;
  • Highway Authority support is vital;
  • Having an adopted Greenways Strategy is important;
  • Links with transport colleagues are essential;
  • Clear and achievable objectives are a must, and need to be set early on;
  • Demand studies are also highly useful, and should be carried out in the early stages;
  • Find funding and plan for the end of the pilot phase earlier;
  • Share information with other Greenways projects.

Following on from the above, the demonstration projects include in their aims for the future:

  • Ensure a Strategy and Action Plan are in place to provide a vision, targets and gain support;
  • Investigate funding opportunities for posts and route implementation further;
  • Ensure projects are better co-ordinated;
  • Investigate long-term maintenance.

All of the demonstration projects are addressing the issues highlighted. Greenways have been found to be popular and useful where implemented.
