The Countryside Agency - now Natural England - investigated what could be done to support the participation in outdoor recreation of disabled people, black and minority ethnic people, people who live in inner city areas and young people. This programme of work is called the 'Diversity Review'.

The Diversity Review was a Defra Rural White Paper 2000 commitment.  For more information on the history and work of the Review, click here.

Natural England produced 'Outdoors for All?' An Action Plan to increase the number of people from under-represented groups who access the natural environment on behalf of Defra.  It aims to ensure that opportunities are maximised for more people from currently under-represented groups to benefit from everything that the outdoors has to offer.

We also carry out other work related to diversity in the natural environment, for example, we have collected disabled peoples' experiences of using the outdoors which is now available in a range of accessible formats.

  2. The consultation on the draft Diversity Action Plan ended in September 2006.  Defra's 'Outdoors for All?' was successfully launched by Jonathan Shaw, Under-Secretary of State for Landscape and Biodiversity in March 2008.

  3. Publications - Diversity Outdoors
We have published three publications: 'Capturing Richness', 'By All Reasonable Means: Inclusive Access to the Outdoors for Disabled People', and, more recently, 'A Sense of Freedom'.
