Permissive access
'Permissive access' means access given by permission of the landowner rather than as a public right of access.
Landowners may provide permissive access to their land for walking, cycling or riding as specified in the individual access agreement. Access may be restricted at specific times of the year, for example to protect ground nesting birds.
The Conservation Walks Register gives details of access to land as part of agri-environment schemes.
The Forestry Commission website provides information on where to go and what you can do in Forestry Commission woods.
Permissive access is also available for some land of outstanding scenic, historic or scientific interest that is conditionally exempt from inheritance tax. The HM Revenue & Customs Heritage Assets provides a searchable directory of conditionally exempt property that includes details of public rights of way and permissive access.
