Improving Understanding

The aim of this research study was to identify and appraise the extent and quality of research and statistical evidence relating to young people’s knowledge, learning opportunities, achievement and progression. It focused on issues concerned with skills, attitudes and behaviours as well as 'understanding'.
The researchers found that the current level of young people’s knowledge and attitudes suggests that there is a strong case for improving teaching and learning about food, farming and land management. It also highlighted the need for teaching and learning initiatives to recognise the complexity of young people’s views and understandings, in particular their motivations, perceptions and experiences.
The research findings emphasise the need for careful planning and sensitive delivery of outdoor-focused educational initiatives. It also highlights the real potential to reinforce academic learning by developing student’s enthusiasm, self-confidence, discipline, self-respect, social and personal skills. Learning techniques to aid this development include:
- classroom-based curriculum strategies such as environmental games and learning incorporating controversial issues;
- projects in school grounds that have knock on effects for the wider community;
- out-of-school learning associated with fieldwork, after school programmes, camps, outdoor activity centres and visits to supermarkets and farmer’s markets.
