Boundary Reviews

In addition to its statutory powers to designate National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in England, Natural England may also vary a National Park boundary using powers granted under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and an AONB Designation Order under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Any boundary change made through these powers will be set out in a (Boundary) Variation Order.

On the 5th of May 2005, the Countryside Agency Board agreed to apply a number of tests when considering proposals for boundary variations and to develop guidance for protected landscape managers and others who wish to put forward such proposals.  Natural England is not, however planning to release new guidance until it has completed a major review of its role in respect of landscape and wildlife related designations.  Changes to policies and procedures may arise from the review.
