Management arrangements in the Tamar Valley AONB
The Tamar Valley AONB Partnership co-ordinates action and directs implementation of the Management Plan within the AONB.
There are two bodies within the Partnership: the Partnership Committee, comprised of Local Authorities, the Countryside Agency and other bodies with a major AONB-wide interest; and the Advisory Forum, which enables wider community representation. The Partnership is supported by the Tamar Valley Service, which provides advice, support, direct action and partnership work to deliver AONB policies.
In 2004, the service published an AONB management plan on behalf of its consitituent local authorities. To view a copy of the management plan and find out more about the Partnership visit their website www.tamarvalley.org.uk.
Statutory policies
The Cornwall and Devon structure plans both make specific provision for AONBs and Heritage Coasts:
The 1997 Replacement Cornwall County Structure Plan states that in terms of landscape protection, priority should be given to the conservation and enhancement of the AONBs (including considering the impact of proposals near to their boundaries). This includes the cumulative impact of development on the landscape. Policy protection is also given to the undeveloped coast and in particular the Heritage Coast.
The Devon County Structure Plan Third Alteration states that "in designated National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the preservation and enhancement of the landscape will be given prioirty over other considerations in the determination of development proposals". Applications for mineral working, tipping and associated activities and extensions to existing quarries affecting AONBs will also be subject to the most rigorous examination.
These main policies are supported throughout the structure plans with policies on housing, employment, industry and commerce, tourism and recreation, mining and quarrying, waste disposal and transportation. The local plans, either adopted or in preparation, also support the structure plans' protective provision for AONBs.
Other AONB documentation
