Management arrangements in the Lincolnshire Wolds

page 2

In 2004, the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service published a management plan for the AONB on behalf of the local authorities.  To view a copy of the management plan and find out more about the work of the Countryside Service visit their website www.lincolnshirewolds.info

Statutory policies

Specific protective provision is made for the AONB in both the Lincolnshire Structure Plan (Consultation Draft (1996)) and Humberside Structure Plan Consultation Draft (1994).

The Lincolnshire Structure Plan states that "the local planning authorities will safeguard the character of the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and pay special attention to the effects of development". The policy rules against any increase in large scale recreational facilities whereas "the provision and improvement of facilities for the quiet enjoyment of the countryside will normally be permitted".

The Humberside Structure Plan states that "areas defined as...Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty will be protected: development that would adversely affect such nationally recognised areas...will not normally be permitted".

These policies are supported by the draft and adopted local plans of East Lindsey and West Lindsey Districts and Cleethorpes Borough Council.

Other AONB publications

In 1993 the Countryside Commission published a Landscape Assessment of the Lincolnshire Wolds (CCP 414, £7.00).

The AONB statement of intent (1971) prepared by the former Lindsey County Council for the whole area, prior to designation and local government reorganisation, still stands and has been implemented over the years by individual local authorities within their development control function.

The statement of intent contained summaries of the AONB's topography and land use, its landscape, natural and historic character and value, its recreational uses and its visual intrusions. The concluding section, on policies and intentions, summarised development control policies, now superseded by newer statutory plans, and positive policies to remove eyesores, plant trees and provide for appropriate countryside recreation.

Action on the ground

The Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Project has worked to repair and restore landscape features and increase awareness of the area's natural importance through environmental education. The project has sought to undertake schemes that attract finance from a variety of sources, with the emphasis on the involvement of landowners and the voluntary sector.

Within their general countryside remit, local authorities are also involved in countryside programmes in the AONB including tree planting and landscape management schemes with farmers and landowners and the provision of conservation advice for farmers through the Farming Wildlife Advisory Group.

Active conservation organisations
Lincolnshire Trust For Nature Conservation, Trust for Lincolnshire Archaeology, Lindsey Archaeological Services, Heritage Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire Council for the Protection of Rural England, English Nature, Ramblers' Association, and Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (Wolds).
