Management arrangements for the Isles of Scilly AONB

page 2

A Joint Advisory Committee (JAC) was formed in 2000 to assist the local authority in delivering a positive integrated approach to the management of the Isles of Scilly AONB.  The JAC membership consists of representatives  from the Countryside Agency, the Council of the Isles of Scilly, Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Duchy of Cornwall, English Nature, Isles of Scilly Tourism Association, Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, National Farmers Union and Tresco Estate.  The AONB Unit consists of one full time Officer and a part time Assistant.

In 2004, the AONB Unit published an AONB management plan on behalf of the Council of the Isles of Scilly.  To view a copy of the Plan and find out more about the work of the Unit visit their website www.ios-aonb.info.

Statutory policies

The Isles of Scilly Local Plan, currently under review, contains protective policies relating both generally to the landscape, nature conservation, marine environment and historic sites as well as specifically to the AONB.  Policy 12 states that "Development which would have an adverse effect on the landscape or amenity value of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will not normally be permitted".

Indications are that existing policies relating to the AONB will be reinforced in the replacement plan.

Other AONB documentation

In 2002, the Countryside Agency published "The Isles of Scilly: a landscape assessment of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" (CA34, £8.00).

Action on the ground

As part of the AONB Unit's work to increase awareness and understanding of the AONB the following have been developed: a dedicated website containing a database of documents relating to the islands; a range of leaflets; a visitor information pack; a newsletter; a cross curricular education pack; interpretation panels and gateway signs.

Habitat management work is undertaken by the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust and English Nature.  As part of the Council's duty to protect and enhance the character of the Conservation Area they have developed a partnership with English Heritage to promote the conservation and enhancement of the built and archaeological environment.
