Management arrangements in Chichester Harbour AONB

page 2

Chichester Harbour Conservancy is both a Statutory Harbour Authority and Joint Advisory Committee.

The Conservancy comprises of 15 appointed members (a majority of local authority representatives with the remainder made up of Advisory Committee members).  It is the formal policy and decision making body.  For further information on the work of the Conservancy and the AONB visit their website www.conservancy.co.uk

In the spring of 2004, the Conservancy published a new AONB Management Plan which sets out a strategic vision for the AONB for the next 5-20 years and how that should be achieved.  The adoption of the management plan by the partner organisations is a clear commitment that they have due regard to the policies in the delivery of their functions within the AONB.  An electronic copy of the management plan can be downloaded from the Conservancy's website.

Statutory policies

Under the Chichester Harbour Conservancy Act 1971, the Conservancy has a duty to maintain and improve the Harbour and Amenity Area for recreation and leisure, nature conservation and natural beauty.

Other AONB publications

In 1992 the Conservancy published a landscape assessment of the AONB using the Countryside Commission guidelines.  (The Chichester Harbour landscape, CCP 381, £7.00)

  • lease and purchase of land to extend opportunities for conservation and access
