Developing Health through a Green Gateway

Health is at the top of the Government's agenda. It is now recognised that there are significant benefits in terms of physical health and mental well-being in having a green environment in which to live and work.

‘Our physical and mental health is reliant on the quality of the environment. There must also be access to a variety of well-managed and maintained green spaces for leisure, sport, recreation and general public benefit to help people choose a healthy lifestyle in urban as well as rural areas.’  (Securing the Future: UK Government’s Sustainable Development Strategy, 2005)

The new developments in Thames Gateway provide a unique opportunity to build in at the planning stage a healthy environment for the future. If we get it right, the Growth Area will be more sustainable, the health service will save money, people will be healthier and live longer, there will be more social inclusion, greater community cohesion, and a better quality of life for all.

There is now considerable evidence from academic research and practical case studies to ensue that considerable multiple benefits are to be gained from bringing together those responsible for creating Thames Gateway in Health, Green Infrastructure and Planning sectors.

Natural England is the catalyst in placing the Health and Green Environment Agenda firmly within Thames Gateway.
