77. North Norfolk Coast

The key characteristics of the North Norfolk Coast are:

• Great variety of texture and detail in coastal landscapes, including intertidal sand and mudflats, sand dunes, shingle banks, saltmarsh, reedbeds, tidal creeks and harbours.

• Wild, remote and open, with long sweeping views.

• Influence of sea: awareness of the dynamic nature of the marine landscape, its smells and sounds, the salt winds and seabirds and the effects of longshore drift.

• Lack of settlements and roads on the coastal marshes but distinctive flint villages strung along the coast road.

• North face of Cromer Ridge and coast road separate coastal strip from inland areas.

• Almost no transitional zones to areas of different landscape character, but great variety within.
