• Fragments of treeless heathland and wet moorland with exposed granite outcrops on the bleak uplands.
• A pattern of small, regular pastoral fields enclosed by granite-faced banks and Cornish hedges.
• Trees and woodlands are uncommon apart from in the sheltered valleys which have wet willow and deciduous woods through which flow fast-running streams.
• Industrial remains and derelict engine houses from the former, small-scale mining industries are common.
• Dispersed settlement pattern of granite hamlets and farmsteads with villages mainly of recent, industrial origin.
