The key characteristics of the Sefton Coast are:
• Broad-scale open landscape comprising low-lying coastal areas with inter-tidal sands, silts and muds, dune systems and dune heaths, with salt marshes along the Ribble Estuary.
• Wide sinuous beaches with extensive sand dune sequences alternating with slacks.
• Extensive coniferous plantations around Formby, with wind sculptured deciduous woodland located on estates, such as Ince Blundell, or farmsteads.
• Settlement pattern remains rural with the exception of Formby, Hightown, Southport and Ainsdale.
• Several golf courses are prominent along the coast.
