The key characteristics of Howgill Falls are:


• A range of distinctive steep-sided, rounded hills, in a well defined pattern of pronounced ridges and valleys.

• Extensive open moorland of rough grass and bracken, with steep scree slopes and occasional waterfalls and crags.

• Dominated by sheep and cattle rearing, with pastures defined by dry stone walls confined to the lower slopes.

• Very limited tree cover.

• Few settlements, occasional small hamlets and farmsteads within the valleys.

• Little known, quiet and remote fells with a sense of wilderness.
