The Landscape Character Network

England has a rich, diverse and beautiful landscape. This unique legacy is not just about biodiversity or landscape or history.


The Landscape Character Network (LCN) is an informal network of over 700 members (January 2006), open free to anyone who is interested in Landscape Character Assessment and its applications.

The Network aims to promote best practice in applying the Landscape Character approach and Landscape Character Assessment by exchanging information, ideas and experience. 

Use of Countryside Character include:
  • planning for future landscapes
  • informing and underpinning spatial planning policies 
  • monitoring change in the environment
  • setting the conditions and criteria for any development and change
  • developing rural economies
  • land management and environmental stewardship  
Benefits of Network membership include:
  • access to the expertise and experience of the Network
  • quarterly newsletter containing news and articles from Network members,
  • invitations to topical workshops
  • access to an online discussion forum

The LCN web site has been developed as the a focus for network activity. The web site includes newsletters available online, interactive discussion forum and groups, details of future topical workshops and an on-line booking facility. Resources and information pages are available including a searchable database of Landscape Character Assessments in England.
