Mapping review project

A detailed mapping review project is being undertaken as part of the Countryside and Right of Way Act 2000.

As part of The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 (CROW), the right of access has now commenced across England. Maps of England outside of inner London have been produced to show all registered common land and open country.

Section 10 of the Countryside and Right of Way Act 2000 requires Natural England to review the conclusive maps at least every ten years. When the Act was passed government recognised the importance of a review, not least because of the constantly changing state of the English countryside.

To meet this review requirement, a detailed mapping review project is being undertaken, which will allow for testing of the existing Mapping Methodology and associated guidance.

The mapping review project has already started. However, before we can revise our mapping processes we need to spend time carrying out a detailed review of what we have already done, review any opportunities to improve our processes and procedures and test and trial different methods out in the field.
